How to Get Unstuck
Career + Personal Goals + Relationships
To figure out what direction to go you have to get clear first. Maybe you feel stuck in your relationship. Maybe you want to change careers, but have no idea how to do that…
“That with which you practice, becomes your path.” -Rich roll
When feelings of being stuck inevitably surface. It’s common to struggle with how to move forward and pick a direction that aligns with our values AND feels like a good fit.
When we have too many choices, for instance, we freeze and do not know which path to choose. When this happens, it’s important to get clear on a few things first. Reflecting through a journaling practice is a great first step. Answering journaling prompts - vs. starring at your journal pages writing to-do lists and dumping random things from your brain - combined with time and space has the power to bring you closer to getting unstuck.
For this to have the power to work, the first step is to pick a time and place where you will most likely have the best follow-through (“time and space blocking”) Maybe this takes place when you wake up (journal ready by your bed), or at the table in the morning with your coffee or tea. If you’re a night owl, light a candle, grab a glass of wine or cup of tea, and find a place in your home that will let you stay focused and be content.
After you figure out when and where this exercise will happen more effectively, consider answering some (if not all) of these prompts:
Today, I want to invite… into my life
What is truly important in my life?
What brings me the most joy in my life?
What can I consider removing from my life that is not serving me and my path forward?
What new schedule and routine can I construct for myself that will allow me to move forward?
What 3 beliefs do I hold about myself that are holding me back?
If I didn’t hold those 3 beliefs, what would change for the better?
Recall a time in my life when I made a choice and I loved the outcome - when the result was a success - and I came out the other side feeling confident. Details are important here.
If you knew it would all work out, what journey forward would you pursue?
Describe it in as much detail as you can.
What does it look like every day?
What does it feel like in your body?
What does it feel like to be happy?
What would a fulfilling (not perfect) day look like each day?
What is holding you back from pursuing that journey right now?
What would happen if you did not pursue this new journey?
While I’m working toward building my new path forward when doubt or racing thoughts creep into my mind, what two ways can I practice self-compassion and understanding rather than be self-critical? Examples could be, giving yourself a hug* reassuring yourself, or reminding yourself that you’ve gotten through hard things before and we will with this too.
How did this exercise go for you? I’d love to hear if anything resonated with you!
